Grief Is Not Linear

There is no roadmap for loss. Understanding the many shapes of grief can offer comfort when you need it most.

Grief is often described in stages, as though loss moves in an orderly line from denial to acceptance. In lived experience, it rarely behaves that way. Grief loops, stalls, and returns without warning.

A song, a smell, or an ordinary Tuesday can bring back the full weight of a loss you thought had settled. This is not a setback. It is how memory and love work together.

Grief also lives in the body. Fatigue, appetite changes, disrupted sleep, and difficulty concentrating are common. Caring for the body — rest, food, gentle movement — is part of caring for the grief.

There is no correct timeline. If grief becomes unrelenting, or if it makes daily life impossible for a long stretch, a grief counsellor or therapist can help you carry it.
