A Conversation About Recovery: Notes From Our First Episode

Recovery is not the absence of illness. Highlights and transcript notes from the launch episode of the Dorf podcast.

August 27, 2026

Our first podcast episode is a long conversation with someone eleven years into recovery from a psychotic illness. We are not naming them, at their request, and that choice is itself part of the subject.

The definition they use is the one that has slowly become standard across European mental health services: recovery is building a life you value, with or without ongoing symptoms. It is not a discharge letter. Some months it includes medication, a support worker and a reduced working week — and still counts.

On relapse: the most useful tool described in the episode is a written plan made while well. It lists early warning signs in the person's own words, the two people who are allowed to say them out loud, the medication agreement, and the practical logistics — who feeds the cat, who calls the employer.

On work: a phased return through Germany's stufenweise Wiedereingliederung (the Hamburger Modell) is described as the single most useful bureaucratic instrument they encountered. In the UK, the parallel is a phased return agreed with occupational health and the Access to Work scheme.

On other people: the sentence they most wanted to hear was not encouragement. It was a friend saying, I read about this, and I will still be here in six months.
